Best Carpet Cleaning Method – How to Choose
This article discusses best carpet cleaning methods considering different situations. It looks at steam cleaning, shampooing, dry cleaning and foam cleaning, and where they are best suited.
With good carpet hygiene, a house can become homey and very comfortable to stay in. There are different methods of cleaning upholstery, and the technique you choose for cleaning your carpets will influence the end results. Each of the methods used by most carpet cleaning companies are only suitable for certain conditions, such as weather, type of carpet stains and many others. Here are the different methods commonly used.
Also called hot water extraction, steam cleaning is done using a hot water cleaning solution, which is sprayed onto the carpet at high pressure using a jet spray. Either a truck mounted or a portable wet vacuum is then used to suck up the injected solution together with water and dirt from the carpet. The procedure can be done in stages starting with thorough pre-vacuum to remove dust followed by treating the stains and spots, spraying the cleaning solution and agitating it into the carpet fibers and then hot water extraction at last. Deodorizing may also be done. This method is very effective where there is need to remove not only dirt but also microbes from the carpet.
In carpet shampooing, a circular brush is used to shampoo a cleaning solution onto the carpet. The carpet is then agitated using effective cleaning machines that create foam due to the rotary action of the brush. Dust and soil particles are trapped in the foam which is vacuumed away. The shampoo and detergents used in this method are also meant to remove any foul smell from the carpet as well as brighten it. The downside of shampooing your carpets is that microbes remain trapped in the fibers and will quickly reappear once the effect of the shampoo fades. Therefore, shampooing is not the best where high hygiene and health standards are required.
Dry cleaning of carpets is sometimes referred to as bonnet cleaning. Heat and chemicals are used in the cleaning process to effectively break down any oily build up in the carpet. A bonnet machine is used with its absorbent pads rotating at high speed picking up the oils and soils in the carpet. The process is sometimes done in stages such as pre-clean vacuum, spot treatment, solvent treatment and then the thorough dry cleaning process. The method proves to be far more effective than vacuuming and is appropriate where stubborn stains are registered on the carpet.
Foam is the main detergent in this method of carpet cleaning. The method lies between dry cleaning and shampooing because very little water is utilized in the process. A cleaning machine is used to agitate foam into the carpet fibers. It attracts soil particles, dust and other forms of solid dirt in the carpet and comes out with them when vacuuming is done. While the trapped soil will be removed, the method is not so thorough to remove stubborn stains.

The material the carpet is made of, whether it has been treated for stain resistance, the location of your home, the amount of traffic in the house or room, drying time and whether there are allergic occupants in the house.
