The holidays are here and you want to make get the house spruced up including cleaning the carpets. How do you avoid carpet cleaning scams and potential criminal activity?
You just received a phone call from your sister telling you they have decided at the last minute to fly to San Jose from Los Angeles because they got great deals on the flights and are coming to your house for Christmas.
You are excited and panicked all at the same time. Last minute guests mean you have little time to prepare the house and finish the shopping. As you hang up the phone, you look down at the floor and realize you have not cleaned your carpets in two years (the last time you had holiday guests) and it is embarrassingly obvious.
You frantically begin looking through the coupon package that came in the mail for a "good deal" on carpet cleaning because you have already spent so much on gifts.
Before you make that phone call consider the following tips that may prevent you from inviting the wrong people into your house and making what seems like a "good deal' a nightmare you will regret.
Here are the five most common scams you will run into:
Carpet cleaning "Bait and Switch"- This happens when you use a coupon or get a phone call from a carpet cleaning company telling you they have a "special" running. They will clean the entire house for just a fraction of the real cost.
When they get to your house, they tell you that it was limited to only three rooms or it does not include stairs or any other number of reasons. They will then tell you how much it is really going to cost...often more than double or triple the original quote. It is too late to hire another company and you feel pressured to allow them to do the job...they count on this happening.
Carpet cleaning "Pre-spotting Scam" -This is something that a reputable company does anyway. It should already be included in the original quote. After all, the reason you hired them was to clean the carpet and logic would say that includes the "carpet stains and spots" and "heavy traffic areas".
If the company tells you, the quote was for "steam cleaning only" that translates into just using water. This will cause you to have a substandard job done and will not get rid of high traffic spots and stains.

Even if you notice it, you may not realize how small a space 250 square feet (or whatever they included) will cover, for instance.
