The "No's" Job: Cleaning Up Your Act and Becoming a Star

Tips to help singers prepare for getting a recording contract.

When I work with artists, both previously unsigned and those who are experiencing valleys in their careers, I share with them my theory of "eliminating the no's." I encourage them to take a hard look at each aspect of their career as an "entertainer" as opposed to "singer" and identify areas that have room for improvement and refinement.

I'm constantly amazed at how many seasoned veterans in the music business parade their clients into record label meetings and showcases prematurely. As an unsigned act, you may very well have the talent to make it in this crazy business we call music, but in today's environment it's just not enough. When you add up all the costs of launching a single on a major label including recording costs, radio promotion, publicity, retail positioning, marketing and video costs, you're essentially asking a record company to invest a million dollars when you ask them for a record deal.

When I help a client prepare for the arduous process of shopping for a record deal I work with them to eliminate the "no's." I take an intense look at every aspect of the package including the quality of the demos we're presenting, the "hit factor" of the songs, the performance and flow of the showcase set, the ability and image of the band, the physical presentation of the artist including weight, wardrobe, and hair (yes, even the guys...especially the guys).

All of these elements contribute to the making of a star, and with each one that is underdeveloped or neglected, a check gets placed in the "no" column of the potential record company you're talking to.

If you take a minute to think about it, I bet you can think of at least a couple people around you that are genuinely honest with you and who's opinions you trust. Ask around and find the best hair stylist in your community, the hippest looking dresser, a local radio DJ or newspaper music reviewer, and the biggest fan of the style of music you perform (preferably not one of your die-hard fans - they won't ever say a negative word, even in the spirit of self-improvement). Ask them for suggestions in improving yourself in their area of expertise. You'll find that most people will be flattered that you're asking for their consultation and they'll likely provide their opinions and suggestions for free.

Before you burn a batch of Cds and wander into the offices of managers, record companies, and booking agencies, take a hard look at these elements and put in the effort to drop that spare tire, spend an extra ten bucks to get a decent haircut, and spring for a set of threads that will make people in a crowded restaurant take a second look and wonder "who is that?" when they see you. Cut out pictures of artists in magazines whose look appeals to you for ideas to amp up your visual image.

Make a compilation CD of your music, but between each of your songs, burn one of your favorites from an artist that attracts the same fans you're going after. Listen to the comp start to finish several times and ask yourself if your songs hold up (here's where the brutal opinion of that local DJ or music reviewer will help).

Set the band up in your rehearsal space, stick a camera on a tripod so that the entire stage is in the frame, and videotape a set as though you were performing in front of a live audience. The audio quality of the recording will likely be sub-standard, but watch the set back in it's entirety, perhaps with a brutally honest friend, pretending you're in the audience. Does the set drag? Do you have too many ballads? Are you opening the set with a balls-out energy song to set the tone? Are you closing the set with one of your strongest up-tempos that will have the audience singing it in their car all the way home? Compare your video to live DVDs of your favorite artists and make notes of actions and mannerisms they use to build energy in their shows. You don't have to mimic them, but the more you look at other artists' performances through this lens, the more you'll learn about making your shows better.

Here's an analogy that may give you some perspective: If you're selling your car, what do you do to it before you slap a "for sale" sign in the window and park it in your front yard? You want to get the most money for old Bessie that you can, so you buff a coat of wax on it, scrub the tires, vacuum the carpets, and even hang a new pine tree air freshener from the mirror to make it as appealing to all senses as you possibly can.

Remember, you are the used car, so by all means, clean the cigarette butts out of your ashtray and scrub the bird droppings off your windshield. Eliminate the no's, and we'll see you at the Grammies.
