How to remove stains on carpet caused by cough syrup? This question is likely to occur to any parent who has attempted to cajole a child to drink cough syrup only to have her spit it out. It's sticky and messy but cleans up surprisingly well.
How to Remove Stains on Carpet: Blot, Blot, Blot!
Cough syrup is notoriously sticky and adheres quite well to carpet fibers. Counteract this adhesion by blotting the spot with absorbent paper towels. Do not rub or press down into the fabric. Instead, allow the absorbent paper to draw the cough syrup out of the carpet fibers. Only after no more cough syrup shows up on the paper towel is it advisable to apply a bit of pressure.
Tip: Work from the outside of the spot toward its center. This avoids spreading sticky cough syrup even further on the carpet.
Remove Stains Caused by Cough Syrup with Diluted Vinegar
Mix equal parts lukewarm water and white vinegar. Dip a clean rag into the solution and apply it to the cough syrup stain. Continue this process until the solution removes a fair amount of the discoloration. Red cough syrup might take a few additional applications - or a stronger vinegar solution - while purple grape-flavored cough syrup comes right out.
Tip: The acidity of the vinegar may lighten the color of the carpet, especially if it was recently dyed. Test the solution in an inconspicuous corner to gauge the effects on the carpet's overall colorfastness.
Red Cough Syrup: Remove Stains That Might Have Set

Remember that - just like its red and purple counterparts - clear cough syrup is extremely sticky and tends to attract dirt, which it then binds to the carpet fibers.

Better the odds of avoiding sticky residue by mixing liquid dishwashing detergent with white vinegar and water. A teaspoon of each into a cup of lukewarm water will suffice.
