The Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner model F8100-900 is a professional strength carpet cleaner that does a great job of cleaning carpets, upholstery and rugs. The Hoover Carpet Cleaner uses MaxExtract technology to deep clean your rugs and carpets which uses a beater brush and rotating brushes along with forced heat to help dry the carpet.
The Hoover Carpet Cleaner is part of the Hoover Platinum Collection and does cost a bit at about $350 and comes with the upright cleaner, the SpinScrub Hand Tool, crevice tool, carpet/upholstery tool and a couple of instruction manuals. The upright carpet cleaner has two tanks, one for water and the other for detergent so you need to watch when you by the carpet cleaner.
I could not find information about which carpet cleaner detergent you can use so I tried a regular strength carpet cleaner that you can mix with water but you don't dilute it with the Hoover Platinum. The separate tank for the cleaner means full strength cleaner in the dispenser tank and the tank even has a monitor to tell you if the tank is empty or even the right kind.
I found this out by first reading the bottle of detergent that came with the cleaner which is just a small sample size that you should be pouring into the tank full strength. I read the bottle and did not read the full directions so I diluted the cleaner down according to the first part of the directions and then poured it into the tank.
The indicator on the cleaner said the detergent tank was empty or needed attention so I figured out it was diluted and not reading the tank correctly. Pouring the detergent in full strength got rid of the tank empty reading and I was ready to clean my carpets with the simple set up.
Setting up the cleaner for use is really easy with the simple instruction manual as well as the quick assembly guide. A quick note about the manual first that comes with the cleaner, it is a card stock thick paged manual with features, operation and troubleshooting instructions on a ringed binder.
Assembling the cleaner is actually pretty easy with putting the handle on and screwing on the cord hooks which secures the handle. The rest is putting the tanks in place and the hose so assembly should only take a few minutes and getting to the first use of your carpet cleaner will not take any longer.
To use the cleaner every time you simply add water to the lower tank and cleaner to the upper tank if they need it, you can easily store water and cleaner in the Hoover Platinum. I found you can leave both water and cleaner in the machine and store the cleaner in a closet or wherever without worrying about leaks too much.
I have had the carpet cleaner for over two months to make sure it worked as well as the company says and I am impressed with its operation as well as not getting water all over the place during storage. Using the cleaner is simple, just set the main power on and the control to either carpet or rugs and press the trigger to dispense water and cleaner.
The rotary dial sets the various cleaning methods like Wash/AutoRinse, Rinse Only, Spill Pickup or Spot Clean and has indicators for tank status and if the cleaner is on rinse or wash cycles. The controls and status works well and is simple to understand for quick reference while you're using the cleaner.
Using the machine much like a regular vacuum you have the upright cleaner tilted back using the foot release and use the common back and forth motion to work at the carpet. The two brush systems use the two actions or circular and rotary brushes to clean the fibers of your carpet and rugs along with the detergent.
The Hoover cleaner features an AutoRinse that works when you have the selector to Wash/AutoRinse setting and sprays water down automatically in a four step cycle. The usual cleaning cycle using the Wash/AutoRinse is you pull the trigger to dispense solution and push the cleaner forward.
When you go to the end of your path and reverse the direction of the cleaner it will dispense a spray of water only on the carpet and scrub the surface. The rinse cycle will help get the dirt out as well as any detergent and has two dry cycles that vacuums up water and dirt as well as blows hot air on the carpet.
The dry cycle when the cleaner is on the Wash/AutoRinse cycle happens when you release the trigger so the water or water and solution are only dispensed when you hold the trigger down. This makes things simple when using the cleaner, when you want to dispense water and solution simply press the trigger and depending on the cycle you choose the cleaner will spray water or water and solution.
The dry cycle works great along with the vacuum so your rugs and carpet get a little extra attention before you are done with the cleaner. I found the carpet cleaner does not put a lot of water down in the first place unless you continue to go over the same area or just use the spot cleaner a lot.
If you find the carpet has too much detergent or just need to use water for some reason, a soap spill comes to mind you can use the Rinse Only setting. The Rinse Only setting will perform the same cleaning as the Wash/AutoRinse cycle without any detergent but the same 4 step wash dry cycles as Wash/AutoRinse.
When trying the cleaner out I went over two main rooms and found the carpet was not wet but a little damp to the touch and dried within two hours. The Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner did a great job of cleaning my household carpeting and the several smaller rugs but the main cleaning of the installed carpeting was great and dried in a few hours instead of overnight.
In the past we have rented carpet cleaners and had to wait overnight for the carpet to be fully dry but with the lesser amount of water and the dry cycles that the Wash/AutoRinse uses that carpet will dry much faster. I found that the Hoover Carpet Cleaner does not put so much water down that it soaks through a padded carpet like my handheld Bissell carpet cleaner does.
The cleaner also has a few extra features just like the more expensive carpet cleaners and even professional models you rent like an upholstery cleaner, crevice tool and small area cleaner using the hose. The SpinScrub hand tool works very well as a handheld scrubber for chairs and sofas that uses the suction of the hose to turn the brush using gears.
This means no spinning brushes at high speeds but a slower but heavy duty spin that scrubs without beating the upholstery to a pulp. You can put your hand on the brush while it is turning and not hurt your hand but it does take a lot of force to stop the bristles from turning.
The Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner also comes with a crevice tool and a nozzle with a line of scrubber bristles along the end for cleaning just about any fabric. Using the hand SpinScrub and the other tools means you can clean chairs, sofas, mattresses and much more as well as get in those cracks and crevices for a full cleaning.
I found using the upholstery cleaner and tools on things like a sofa was easy and the cleaner works just as well on smaller things like cushions and even those small rugs. The upright cleaner has a setting for these smaller rugs that does not use as much force on the roller and spin brushes as the carpet setting.
Using the rug setting means the smaller throw rugs will not get thrown around and pulled up by the brushes so you can wash smaller rugs but if you have softer ones they may get moved around. I found the small rugs like ones backed with rubber cleaned fine but ones that are a softer material would get moved around some.
But these were small enough that you could hang them in the shower and just wash them there so for rugs that are used for entry ways around 3 by 4 feet you can use the carpet cleaner and rug setting easily. Much smaller rugs than that without any kind of backing you may want to wash another way but I had no problem washing rubber backed 2 by 3 foot rugs and larger.
You can use the Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner for spill pickup on both carpets and hardwood floors using just the Spill Pickup setting without using any water or detergent and without the brush action. You can also use the Spot Clean setting and the trigger to squirt down water and detergent on a desired spot and even fine tune the spray by turning the nozzle.
Cleaning out the tank after cleaning or during cleaning when the tank is full is simple, move the handle down to the floor and pull the tank straight up using the handle. The tank will simply come off the cleaner and you carry it to a sink or tub and empty the dirty water as well as rinse the filter screen that is replaceable.
Wash the tank out by pouring some water in and swirling it around and pouring it out, you may have to do this a couple of times but you can wash out the tank pretty easily. This tank has a couple of various areas that you cannot wipe out by hand easily but you can rinse it out and swirl the water around to clean it out fully.
You can also take apart the cleaner fully by removing the tank parts, the suction nozzle parts and remove the brushes using the instructions. This went pretty well and I found was easy to get the parts off and cleaned without using any tools for simple but thorough cleaning of the entire machine.
All the rinsing and cleanup is easiest to do with a hose in a tub or laundry sink as the parts are a bit too large for a common kitchen sink. You can get all the parts off and cleaned easily after your fully done with the cleaning and you probably should empty the water out if your storing the machine for more than a few days.
I found the Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner was easy to use as well as easy to clean out but the cleaner is a bit heavy if you need to lug it up stairs. If your moving the cleaner around the house it may be easiest to remove the water and detergent tank and move them separately, at least you can remove them with this machine.
Using the cleaner for carpets and rugs worked very well and even spot cleaning worked well and really did get out spots on my older carpeting. The cleaner worked well and I had no problems getting my new home with its old and much worn carpeting looking a lot better.
The cleaner did pull up a lot of dirt out of the carpets and did not leave much behind after cleaning, I tested this by cleaning a landing of my stairs and then pulled the carpet up to see if any had leaked through the padding. The padding was dry and no water was on the wood floor beneath the padding so the cleaner does not put much water down in the first place.
Cleaning out the various parts of the vacuum nozzles and brushes went quite easily and the typical housewife should have no problems getting the cleaner fully rinsed out after use. Even removing the brushes and fully disassembling the vacuum to get the roller brushes cleaned was easy using a Philips screwdriver.
I really found no problems while using this cleaner for two months and by the reviews on Amazon few people had any problems as well. A few complaints from a few people are common for any consumer products and I found the four and a half stars average for the 57 people who reviewed the Hoover Carpet Cleaner was a very good rating and very accurate.
The Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner is also warranted for 6 years so you get a good Hoover warranty with this more expensive purchase. The Hoover Platinum costs about $350 and is available from several retail and online stores such as Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy to name a few.
I highly recommend the Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner for a great carpet cleaner for both your carpets and upholstery. The Hoover Platinum Carpet Cleaner works well, is easy to clean and has plenty of extra features to warrant the cost of this professional quality carpet cleaner.
