Setting Up a Planted Aquarium

Choosing the right type of aquarium, plants, and fish takes a little planning. Buying aquarium fish and plants involves more than simply going to the pet store and buying the most attractive species. Decisions need to be made first!

Stetting up the tank

Choose a location in your home that is not in direct sunlight but close to an electrical outlet and in a living area so that shy fish can get use to people walking by. Once the aquarium is set up it won't be easy to move.

Adding gravel

All aquarium stores sell gravel for freshwater aquariums and they come in a variety of sizes from very fine to coarse. The ideal size to use is about 1/8 inch or medium pea-size gravel. If it's too fine it could harm bottom feeders and if it's too coarse fish that stir up the bottom will not be able to dig. The gravel should be 2 1/2 to 3 inches deep to anchor plants and to provide a habitat for useful bacteria that will rid the aquarium of toxic waste. Slope the gravel a little higher toward the back of the tank.

Adding decorative material, filter system, and water heater

Add the filter system and water heater first but don't plug them in. Now you can add the decorations such as rocks or pieces of wood. Please don't use plastic sheets of underwater scenes on the back of the tank. They look unnatural and will clash with your plants. You can use tall plants for a background cover and smaller plants to hide equipment.

Planning you plant landscape

Aquarium plants are easier to plant before adding water. Arrange the plants on a table as they will be planted in the aquarium. Taller plants in the background, medium plants can be arranged at the sides or middle, and low plants more toward the front area of the tank. Plants should vary in height as they do in nature.

Don't over do it! Fish need plenty of swimming room. Spray the plants with water to keep them from drying out. Remove any brown or dead leaves and trim the roots if they are excessively long.

Adding the plants

Add enough water to moisten the gravel. Most plants can be planted now with the exception of very fragile or delicate plants. They can be added when the tank is partially filled. Using your plant layout as a guide, dig a hole and set the root ball in it and gently press the gravel around the plant the same as you would if your were planting flowers in the ground. Be careful not to damage the roots or stems.

If you have very delicate plants, fill the tank with warm water about 3/4 full. Place a plate or any slanted surface in the aquarium to pour the water over so you don't disturb the gravel or plants. Use planting tongs for adding the remaining plants. If you use your hands, wear plastic or rubber gloves or make sure they are absolutely clean and free of lotion and soap residue. Rinse your hands several times.

Before adding fish, let your water mature

Now you can completely fill the tank and turn on the filter, lights and water heater. After adding the hood, make sure everything is working as they should. The finished tank needs to mature before adding any fish.

Water circulation, water temperature, and filtration will help your water mature. Many experienced aquarist feel you need to allow your aquarium to mature a minimum of two to six weeks to have a well established nitrogen cycle but that depends on the pH and hardness of your water. I've added fish as soon as two weeks without any problems.

Add a couple of fish every few days and monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Remember to calculate the maximum number of fish your tank will hold and don't over crowd. Float the plastic bag of fish in the tank to acclimate to the aquarium for ten to fifteen minutes.

Open the bag and allow a little of the aquarium water into the bag and let it sit for another fifteen minutes. Now you can add the fish by opening the bag and gently tilt the bag to let the fish out.

With regular maintenance and monitoring, you'll be able to provide your aquarium pets with a healthy and happy environment. Our fish need good, clean water to feel at home.
