A Comparason of Flea Control Products
does Flea powder work? Is dip better for your dog? Is a flea collar going to stop your pets scratching?
I have had dogs all my life and have been through many types of flea control. I started working with a dog guide in 1995 and determined that I couldn't, with good concience4, go out into public with my guide and have her scratching and passing on fleas.
I have tried many types of flea control with my pet dogs and will give you what I think to be the plus and minus to each option.
Before purchasing any sort of flea treatment online or at your local department store consult your veterinarian for the proper dosage and type of flea control that is right for your special pet.
We'll start with the flea collar: A flea collar has to its favor the fact that it is inexpensive, easy to use, easy to find and there is, no prescription needed in order to obtain one. On the other hand; Flea collars smell, they never seem to be the right size and in my experience they simply do not work... I have tried Hartz, and Sergeants and had no luck with either after the first couple of days. The things smell so bad that you can't stand to snuggle with your pup without a clothespin on your nose and if you have children you are constantly telling them to leave the dog alone as they have a new flea collar that they shouldn't touch..
Flea Powder is another common way to rid one's pet of fleas, on the plus side it is inexpensive and easy to find, in any drug or department store. However it makes one heck of a mess. The cloud of powder you need to use also keeps you away from your pet. I've tried Hartz and Sergeants Flea powders and although they will kill fleas the mess simply isn't worth it. Flea soap and flea shampoo are also easily available and inexpensive this is another choice that works on a temporary basis. They don't keep the fleas from returning but will kill them when they are used. Now on to flea dip. Flea dip works, plainly and simply it will kill fleas is inexpensive and can be purchased over the counter or from your vet. It is great if your dog already has fleas and you need to get rid of them in a hurry. Dip does kill fleas but it will not keep the fleas from returning to your pet. You will need some other sort of flea control after you have dipped your dog in order to keep the fleas away.
Topical flea treatments such as Advantage and Frontline are a more recent edition to your flea control choices. These treatments come in a small tube and are applied to the back of your pet's neck directly onto the animal's skin. They are absorbed into the animal's bloodstream and make it unfavorable for fleas to survive. .. This type of treatment lasts 30 days... I've used a topical treatment on 3 of my guides and never had a problem with fleas. I would most definitely recommend this choice. Topical treatments are more expensive and must be obtained from a veterinarian. They do have detectable odor but after three or four days it is permissible to bathe your pet.
I do want to mention here that if you already have a flea infestation you will need to not only rid your pet of fleas but the house will need to be treated with either a flea bomb or a carpet spray. Consult your veterinarian for the most effective way to stop fleas from returning.
I hope I have been of some help in keeping your pet and home free of fleas.
I know how important it is for a working dog as well as for that special friend who doesn't deserve to spend his time scratching when he could be playing with his favorite toy or snuggling with you....
