Learn how to remove carpet stains, how to clean effectively and some homemade carpet cleaning remedies.
The biggest secret of stain removal on carpets is speed. Always treat any spillages as soon as possible. Try out the following steps:
Scrape of any deposit, making sure that the stain does not spread.
Use a paper towel or similar to blot up any liquid, a wad of tissue or cloth is ideal. Whatever you do, do not add more liquid to the paper tissue or cloth.
Treat stains like fruit juice, wine, beer, coffee, urine, spirits, with a carpet shampoo.
Treat grease-based stains like gravy, oil, milk and plasticine or putty, with a dry-cleaning solvent.
Once applied, rinse off any shampoo or solvent thoroughly with warm - never hot - water. Otherwise, it will harden, add dust, and turn into a stain itself.
When shampooing a stain or small patch use a special quick drying shampoo. Use just enough on a cloth to moisten the area, and turn the cloth over as it soaks up the stain. Work from the outside of the stain pushing inwards, so you do not spread the stain further out. Finally, cover the area with a paper towel and weigh it down with a heavy object or paper-weight. Leave overnight for the towel to absorb all the moisture.

Wherever possible, encourage family members and guests to remove their shoes when they enter your home. Metal-tipped high heels and crepe-soled shoes will twist and pull the carpet pile.
