Insulating Your Walls
Information about the benefits of injected wall foam insulation vs. other forms of insulation in existing homes.
We have all heard the expression, "If these walls could talk…" well, what if they could? Would they tell us that the picture of Aunt Gertrude is crooked or that there is a spaghetti sauce stain in the bottom right hand corner from last weekend's food fight? Ok, so before I get carried away with all the embarrassing possibilities of what secrets our walls keep, many people may be surprised to know that our walls really do talk, we just need to know how to listen.
Through my years of experience working in the home building/improvement industry, many homeowners ask how they will know if their walls need insulation. Drafty rooms are a clear indication that the insulation in walls is no longer effectively doing its job. As a result of poor insulation, temperature changes, and outdoor elements, the walls inside a home are more vulnerable to mold, insects, and rodents. All of these home invaders greatly contribute to health risks such as allergies or respiratory illness.
Whether the insulation install is do-it-yourself or through a professional contractor, even a one room project can have the entire household in an inconvenient turmoil until everything is back to normal. For homeowners wanting to add insulation to their home, here are a few options to consider first.
Rockwool Insulation-
Older homes were often insulated with loose fill rockwool, sawdust, balsa, or shredded newspaper. Additionally, it is possible that many of the older homes have no insulation between the inside and outside walls. Rockwool loose fill insulation holds an estimated R value of 2.25 per inch.
Spray Foam Insulation-
In new construction, almost all homes built today have spray foam insulation. This spray foam is an energy savings insulation with R values between 3 to 6 inches. In an interview with Josh Wadsworth, owner of JoCo Builders, this process is done by spraying on layers of foam before the sheetrock is installed. Wadsworth states, "In the case of an existing home, the installation of spray foam insulation also involves tearing down sheet rock but it is a more costly option than fiberglass." Fiberglass insulation has R values between 3.1 to 4.3.
Injected Wall Foam Insulation-
In recent years, an insulation primarily used in commercial buildings, has started emerging in the residential insulation market. Initially developed in 1966, HomesulateTM states their "Insulation was specifically designed and formulated as highly efficient thermal and acoustical cavity-fill insulation. For 36 years, it has been specified and installed in more than 390 million square feet of new and existing commercial and residential construction."
The install is performed by drilling holes in the mortar of a brick home, stucco, or underneath siding. The non-urea formaldehyde based proprietary insulation is injected and fully expanded once it is released from the install equipment. The insulation fills over existing insulation and fills all corners and crevices of the wall. Once complete the installer fills holes back in behind siding or with matching colors for mortar or stucco. The R value of injected wall foam insulation rates 5.1 per inch.
Homeowners can find more information about the U.S. Department of Energy recommended insulation levels based on geographic location. Information about insulation is also available from their website in PDF format.
