So you want to buy a Dyson vacuum cleaner? This article will give you the pros and cons and a personal evaluation of the machine that touts superior performance.
What Makes a Dyson Different?
With a trip to the Dyson.com website you can quickly see illustrations and explanations of Dyson's vacuum technology. First, these machines operate on what they term "patented Root cyclone technology" and claim that the vacuums do not loose suction. Second, the newest Dyson models travel across your floors on "ball technology" which is supposed to provide increased maneuverability.
Is Dyson different? Since Dyson's release a number of other manufacturers have brought "cyclonic action" machines to market. I haven't seen other brand "ball technology" yet, but I'm sure it's right around the corner, too.
What Do the Reviews Say?
The task remains to cut through all the hype and determine if Dyson is really worth the money at a minimum cost of $349 plus for a new model.
I've done extensive research on all models of the Dyson vacuum cleaner with an emphasis on the two most popular model uprights: Dyson DC14; Upright (non-ball technology) and Dyson DC25; Animal Ball Technology Upright.
I have invested over 75 hours of reading countless reviews written by bloggers, self proclaimed review sites and personal opinions by consumers who actually own a Dyson. I am partial to actual owner reviews on Amazon.com since they're pretty straight forward and don't mince their words. Overall you will find that on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best), Dyson consistently rates at 4 or above. Yes, there are those who are not satisfied with their purchase and voice their complaints loudly; however, with a 323 review count at Amazon, the rating still hits 4 (even with the negative reviews averaged in).
Does Dyson Deliver?
When it comes down to it, the only way to know if a product performs is to own one. I have owned countless vacuum cleaners including: Electrolux, Oreck, Bissell, Hoover, Eureka, Dirt Devil, Black amp; Decker and Dyson.
With the exception of the Electrolux, Oreck and Dyson, none of these cleaners lasted beyond one or two years. The Electrolux lasted a little more than three years before it began to fail and the Oreck didn't make it to three years of continuous service. The Dyson DC14, however, has just passed five years and it's still going strong.
In addition to my personal experience, a close friend recently purchased a Dyson DC25 and she is thrilled with the performance of that model.
Here are the pros and cons I can attest to:
Pros
The best feature of this vacuum is the continued, strong suction power - even after five years. To illustrate the strength of this machine, I can tell you that when I first brought it home, I vacuumed a living room carpet I had just done with my 8 month old Eureka upright and I filled the Dyson canister with dirt and pet hair. My friend was amazed to have the same exact experience with her new Dyson.
The cord on the Dyson is extremely long at about 35 feet. I can actually make it from the front to the back of my house without changing outlets because the telescoping wand adds another 17 feet of reach.
I don't have the ball model, but my friend reports it does maneuver much better than any other upright she's ever owned.
Cons
Although the telescoping wand is a great feature, it is also one of the few things that could use improvement. The hose is awkward and stiff to work with - even with the extra reach it gives me.
Every two or three months, I notice a slight difference in performance. When it first happened, I was heartbroken because I thought my dream machine was a dud. But, I turned the vacuum over to see the beater bar and found that it had picked up so much of my long hair that it had all gotten wrapped around the bar. I cleared it away and the performance was back to stellar. I had to do this with my other vacuums about once a year (probably because that's all the hair they gathered).
The Final Verdict
Is the Dyson worth the money? In my humble opinion - absolutely. It's sturdy, it's powerful and after five years of constant use in a three pet household, it's still going strong. I'm hoping I won't have to replace it any time soon - but when I do, I'll be buying another Dyson.
