The Dyson Air Multiplier Fan
People talk about the science of invention as "building a better mousetrap." James Dyson, a British inventor, has invented a better vacuum cleaner, a better hand dryer, and now a better fan, the Dyson Air Multiplier fan.
Dyson Air Multiplier fan looks like no fan that ever existed before. It does not have the rotating blades that fans have used for over a century to move stagnant air. A classic fan chops the air and pushes it forward in a kind of buffeting motion, which some people can find unpleasant.
The Dyson Air Multiplier fan operates on an entirely different principle. The Dyson Air Multiplier fan forces a jet of air through a narrow slit over a sixteen inch circular air foil. As a result, a continuous stream of air is generated. Because there are no blades (or obvious moving parts) the Dyson Air Multiplier fan is safer and more energy efficient. It "multiplies" air by a factor of fifteen and pushes 119 gallons of air in the continuous stream every second. Part of the secret is that not only is air drawn through the unit and through the air foil, but also surrounding air if "entrained" and is added to the air flow.
James Dyson claims that since the Dyson Air Multiplier fan shoots a continuous flow of air, it has a greater cooling effect than a standard, bladed fan that buffets the air. He also claims that his Dyson Air Multiplier fan is healthier and better for one than an air conditioner. That last claim is somewhat debatable, especially in places with very warm, very humid climates. Still, air conditioning systems that incorporate the continuous flow technology would very likely operate more efficiently. Running an air conditioner during the summer is the most expensive, energy intensive thing a homeowner does/.
James Dyson is already famous for having invented the bagless vacuum cleaner and the towel-less hand dryer. Dyson and his team spent four years optimizing the Dyson Air Multiplier fan, using the science of fluid dynamics to create turbulence free air and thus do away with blades.
Of course new devices using new technology do not come cheap. The Dyson Air Multiplier fan, which also comes in twelve inch and ten inch models, retails for several hundred dollars, as opposed to tens of dollars that a conventional bladed fan retails for. If the Dyson Air Multiplier fan takes off, one suspects that the price will come down considerably over time.
