How to Buy Carpet and Save Money
Save money when you purchase new carpet. Here's how we saved approximately 50% over retail prices.
If you haven't already done so, measure the room or rooms you will be buying carpeting for. Get the final amount in both square feet and square yard measurements. For square yards, take the square foot measurement and divide by 9.
Check out your local stores, just to see what they are selling carpet for. Ask about installation costs, too. Often, installation is a good third or more of your total cost of having carpet put it. Record prices of some carpets you like from at least two local stores. Be sure to record the carpet brand, style/name, thickness, height, weight, density, and cost.
Now, look on the internet for "carpet warehouses in Dalton, Georgia" or "carpet discount warehouses". Any search engine will find these for you if you type in that phrase. All your local stores buy their carpet from the carpet warehouses in Dalton, GA, and then mark up the price to sell to you. The carpet warehouses are generally happy to sell to the regular customer, as well as carpet stores.
Two carpet warehouses to get you started are Beckler's Carpet and Ingles' Carpet. Both of these are in Dalton, Ga. Both of these sent us 4 carpet samples free of charge. We were then able to choose a carpet we liked from one of the samples. This saved us the trip we were planning to make to Georgia. There are lots of other warehouses in Dalton to consider, though.
When looking at carpet from warehouses, be aware they have two different pricing structures: cut and roll. This has nothing to do with whether you order a full or partial roll; it's just their terms for the different ways of pricing. The roll price is always less expensive than the cut price, but it depends on how many square yards of carpet you need. You have to order a certain amount of carpet to get the roll price, otherwise, you will pay the cut price. Each company is little different, so be sure and ask how many yards you have to order to get the roll price.
Next, get out your list of carpets you liked from local stores. Tell the warehouse sales person what you're interested in. They can tell you their price on that carpet and also some similar quality carpets. Don't forget to order padding, too! Padding was cheaper for us to order, than from local stores.
Ask about shipping. It was cheaper for us to order both carpet and padding from the warehouse and pay shipping, then to buy from a local carpet store. Also, ask about receiving. They probably deliver, but may not unload the carpet and padding. See if your installer will receive the carpet for you.
Ask if they'll send you samples free of charge. Some of them will. Look over the samples and decide what you like.
Order the carpet and padding you need. You must pay with credit or debit card. They don't do loans.
Last step is to find a local installer to put it in for you. Start by looking in the phone book under Carpet Installers. Also, some local carpet stores will install carpet you bought elsewhere. Just ask what the price is per square foot to install and add that into your price. Make sure the installer will stretch the carpet. It's the professional way to do it. Your carpet looks better and will last longer if it's stretched.
