Dog Walkers: A New Sidewalk Nuisance?
Do you like walking dogs? Would you push it in a baby walker instead? You would?
A dog walker?
Let me get this straight. They now sell dog walkers, styled after baby walkers, for dogs who are perfectly capable of walking on their own better than most people? Or is this posh invention strictly for petite wobbling puppies still finding their walking paws? Whatever the justification, it appears as the brainchild of a marketing team intent on selling more trinkets to obsessive pet owners.
After the show ended, I web searched for dog walkers - the contraption - not the people who are employed to walk Fido and FiFi each day for their busy, wealthy owners. On several sites, I found pet strollers costing upwards of 125 dollars. What a bargain!
If this is some chic fad, let's hope it doesn't last. If it does catch on, imagine how more complicated sidewalk navigation will get? It's bad enough that we have these enormous infant strollers that have more in common with top of the line SUV's than baby carriages. We have trouble avoiding collisions with these Kids R Us monstrosities, but add doggie buggies into the mix? Will big cities like Boston and New York have pet traffic jams?
You have to wonder, is this good for dogs? Dogs should get plenty of exercise. We all notice much fatter pets lately. Here's a way to keep them plump and see them grow even rounder. Gee, thanks pet industry!
For kids like Dakota, I suppose it's educational. Perhaps, they're caring for the first vulnerable little thing in their lives. This allows them to build up nurturing skills and learn responsibility. We also did that back in my day. When I was a kid, I walked my little beagle with a leash. Of course that was in the chic deprived stone age called the 1970's.
So next time you're walking along, don't be surprised when you look into the thing you think is a baby stroller and a face with a wet nosed snout returns your gaze. No, it's not a one in a million ugly baby, it's just a spoiled Snoopy or Lassie getting a lift to save their tired paws.
