The Best and Worst Sunscreen According to Consumer Reports

Sunscreens are a part of our everyday lives in the summer. They are important to prevent skin cancer and sunburns. This article reviews consumer reports results after testing a myriad of sunscreens.

Spray sunscreens, over lotions, have made a surge in the market in the recent years, no doubt due to their ease of application and lack of gooey residue left on hands and skin. However, consumer reports has announced that spray sunscreens have hit the bottom of the list as far as effectiveness. Since they have the same effective ingredients as lotions, these findings lie in the application process. Simply put, they don't apply as easily and still require to be rubbed in with both hands. For many, this takes away part of the appeal of the spray sunscreens.

When talking about sunscreen, it is important to note that a sunscreen should be effective in preventing BOTH UVA rays and UVB rays. Sun protection factor, or more commonly known as SPF, is the number of protection offered only to UVB rays.

Consumer reports also noted that there was absolutely no correlation between effective sunscreen and price. Many people assume that a higher priced sunscreen must be a better product, but testing has shown that is not so! In fact, sunscreen products that are only available at doctor and dermatologists office, products that are priced much higher, tested near the bottom of the pile.

So, you are wondering, what is the best and worst sunscreen product?

Drum roll please.......the winner for the best sunscreen product is..........Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch. This product can be found at your local drugstore, and cost per ounce averages $4.33. This product is in the middle price range for sunscreens and sunblocks. Consumer report testers liked this product because of it's effectiveness against both UVA and UVB rays.

Are you wondering which product to avoid?

The last place contender was Innovative Skin Care Sunscreen. This product can only be purchased through a doctor's office and can cost as much as $11.00 per ounce! This product was very ineffective, and not even waterproof.

Another good, affordable option that consumer reports recommends is No-ad sunscreen. This product performed well when put to the test, and costs a mere .67 an ounce! A great choice for families!

Sunscreens are an important product during the summer, and can be quite costly. Consumer reports has shown us that cost does not equal effectiveness.
