Celebrities Walked the Red Carpet with Pizzazz at the SAG Awards
This article shares a recap of the red carpet fashion at the Screen Actors Guild award show.
Black, charcoal, brown, yellow, blue, green, and all shades of purple and white were present. For the most part, the women looked unusually elegant and polished. While most chose floor length gowns, a few opted for short dresses and one or two even donned a tux.
Glenn Close, who often misses with fashion, looked every bit the star in elegant green and silver gown with a loosely upswept hairdo. But she wasn't the only one wearing green.
Diane Lane chose a deep forest green gown that accented her lovely eyes and hair, which she pushed back in an elegant do. Amanda Bynes, a nominee for Hairspray, chose a teal green babydoll style gown with silver beading at the bust. She kept her hair soft and loose, pulling it up only slightly in front. The look was stunning without overstepping the bounds of propriety for someone so young.
Metallics were popular as well. Nominee Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) wore a metallic plum colored leather coat that looked good with her flaming red hair. However, it did seem just a tad underwhelming for such an elegant night.
Nominees Debra Messing (The Starter Wife) and Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?) also choose metallics. Debra went for gold sequins and glitter that accented her red hair to a tee. She left her locks loose and wavy; very Rita Hayworth. Christina, on the other hand, opted for soft silver and white that made her look like a snow queen. Her icy blond locks were pulled back and up in a very soft and youthful style.
Chandra Wilson (Grey's Anatomy) also opted for golden sequins but softened the look with a shorter, form fitting cocktail dress. She sported a new, edgy bob hairstyle that well suited her bubbling personality.
Eva Longoria and her co-star Teri Hatcher also choose silver and white gowns that made them look as though they had stepped out of Hollywood's golden era. Eva wore her hair in a curly soft updo, which made her look very angelic. Teri's severe slicked back do was a bit severe for her facial features but her smile made all of the difference.
Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) choose a more ivory white floor-length gown that somehow still managed to look a bit messy like her signature long blond locks. However, her skin and makeup looked flawless, giving the actress a golden glow.
Kate Beckinsale looked stunning in a bright yellowed ruffled gown that worked well for her slim figure. She left her hair soft and dreamlike in front, pulling the back into a half-up, half-down modern hairdo.
Also dressed in golden yellow was the ever glamorous Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty). She also chose to wear her hair half-up and half-down but kept it straight and long.
Gray was a popular color among actresses of all ages. America Ferrara (Ugly Betty) chose a steel gray lace gown that was glamorous without making her look too old. She accented it with a soft updo.
Also dressed in gray was Grey's Anatomy star, Ellen Pompeo. Her simple, satin gown was divinely elegant. She pulled her hair back, fastening it loosely at the nape of her neck. In a similar gown in a darker shade of gray was the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer. She also sported a relaxed updo.
French actress, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) chose a pale gray gown that floated beautifully as she glided onto the stage. She, too, pulled her hair back at the nape of her neck, accenting it with gossamer jewels.
Angelina Jolie, a nominee for A Mighty Heart, floated in with a gown of tie-dyed brown that beautifully matched her loose long locks. Nominee Ruby Dee (American Gangster) also opted for brown; this time in a taupe shade that looked amazing against her skin. She kept her hair short and simple and looked every bit the grand dame.
There was a lot of black on the red carpet as well. Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) chose to wear hers in conjunction with red in an edgy couture style gown. She kept her hair simple, pulling it away from her face.
In contrast, Tina Fey's (30 Rock) short black, over one shoulder cocktail dress looked a bit sad and cheap; hardly befitting the spunky Golden Globe and SAG Award winning actress.
Another black miss was Juno's Ellen Page. Although simple and chic, it made her look far too old for her young years. Pulling her hair back severely with ragged straight front strings seemed to only make the overall look more mature.
Jeanne Tripplehorn's boring black dress failed to thrill as well. Her makeup unfortunately didn't add much to the overall look either.
Marg Helgenberger also went for a one shoulder black dress. However, she kept her long hair straight and pushed it over to one side. On the flip side, Sally Field, nominee for Brothers and Sisters, chose a classic black dress was perfect for the petite actress who always prefers to keep it simple.
Nominees Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) and Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray) stood out in royal blue. Kyra never looked more beautiful in her perfectly fitted gown with a pulled back chignon hairstyle. Niki's blue satin, off-the-shoulder gown was also a stunner, albeit a tad too old for the young actress.
Ellen Burstyn, nominee for One More Day stood out in the crowd with her orange gown covered by a gold metallic duster with embroidery trim. Although most could not get away with the look, on Burstyn it somehow looked just right.
Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There) and Kate Hudson went for print. Blanchett's black floral print was adorable, but perhaps a bit staid for such a glamorous event. Hudson's hippy style print dress fitted her perfectly and was reminiscent of something her mother might have worn in the 60's.
Most of the men stuck with the black tux or suit, white shirt and tie. However, a few opted for something more or less.
Nominee Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) chose to where his shirt unbutton and went without a tie. On most actors that look would have been shameful. But for some reason on Bardem, it worked.
Ludacris' pale lavender shirt and tie was fresh and fit his personality. He could have walked right off of the cover of GQ magazine.
Viggo Mortenson's (Eastern Promises) black and red pinstripe suit with a duster coat and red shirt was unique and striking. Whether it was a positive or negative statement, however, was most likely in the eye of the beholder.
Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) went for a charcoal suit with a deep taupe trim around the lapel. While I didn't particularly care for the look myself, it certainly suited his persona.
Denis Leary also opted for a color other than black. He chose a deep brown suit with a stunning bronze colored tie that set off the color of his hair and complimented his skin tone very well.
Both Tony Shaloub (Monk) and William Peterson (CSI) went for the all black look, which actually looked quite good on both of them. Burt Reynolds also went mega black, adding a black sweater to his suit, which appeared to be velvet or corduroy.
While Forest Whitaker stuck with subtle black and white colors, his suit lapel offered a touch of personality with some kind of black braid or trim. All in all, I have to say that the men tried very hard to step up their game and, for the most part, succeeded marvelously.
With so much right about SAG fashions this year, it is difficult to choose the best and worst dressed, but here are my picks:
Best Dressed Woman: Glen Close. My choice is not so much that she looked better than the other ladies as the fact that she really changed it up; opting for a soft feminine look that suited her well.
Best Dressed Man: I'm going for Ludacris on this one because he went out on a limb with a pastel shirt and tie. The look worked for him and made his appearance memorable.
Worst Dressed Woman: Tina Fey. An award nominee, particularly one favored to win after picking up the Golden Globe, should have opted for something with more pizzazz. Instead of a winner, she looked like the last runner up.
Worst Dressed Man: As much as I love the actor, I have to go with Burt Reynolds. Everything about his ensemble was just plain wrong.
